Trims

DIY Project Sheet No 6

nterior trims When you have completed wallpapering your doll house, it is time to add the trims. Good trim work can further highlight your wallpaper or paint work, and further personalise your house. The following are some tips to help you with your trim work.

Each room will require trimming work , whether painted or wall papered. There are many types and styles of trim available. Select one that matches the period you are re-creating.

We recommend that all trim is pre cut and painted/stained prior to gluing in place. It is also recommended that trim is measured and pre cut prior to wallpapering, so that the painted or wallpapered surfaced are not marked when measuring and marking trim.

We recommend using a small mitre box and saw specially designed for miniatures when cutting trims. If after cutting, the pieces don’t match exactly together, try sanding the edges with a fine grade sandpaper.

(a) Skirting boards
Measure the amount of skirting required to complete each room. This will give you an indication of the amount you will need to purchase. Measure and recheck prior to cutting each length. When you have all skirting cut for one room, glue in place, paying attention to joins.

(b) Ceiling cornices
Measure the amount of cornice required to complete each room. This will be a guide to the amount required to complete the house. Measure and recheck prior to cutting each length. Use a small mitre box for best results. When all cornice pieces are ready for one room, glue in place, paying attention to joins. We recommend you cut two lengths of small diameter dowel as a prop to hold the cornice firmly in place (from the skirting diagonally opposite as a support) while the glue is setting.

(c) Window and door trim
Many windows and doors may come with trim. If not, measure and recheck prior to cutting each length. We recommend using a small mitre box to ensure neat corner joins. When gluing the trim in place, ensure that the window or door is centred in it’s opening, so that the space will be covered by the trim, and everything looks square.
